Words, words, words. That’s all we have as writers, and they’re all that exist between us and the reader. I’ve been reminded this week that the saying “actions speak louder than words” is true in life and in fiction. People can talk, talk, talk, but does their action back it up? This is important to remember in fiction as well. Your character can say nothing, but then smash a guitar because he is angry. Your narrator may be in the best of moods, so she twirls when she enters her house.
As powerful as actions are though, words can be actions too. The way characters talk to each other and the things they reveal in dialogue also drive the action.
